Life Balance - 7 Steps to Discover the Joy of Life Balance

When your life is in sync, it is a clear indication that you are in control, knowing and doing exactly what has been identified as significant. Somewhere along the way on your journey of life, you have discovered your life purpose and are well on your way to having a purposeful existence. The abyss between bewilderment and intentional direction has been closed.

Discovering the joy of a balanced life can be found in the following steps:

  1. Begin with a clearly defined life vision that is in line with your gifts and abilities. Some ideas to jump start the vision include:

    • Dream big as you envision the reality of your dream and don't let lack of money or resources hinder the depth and scope of the dream;

    • Let your mind wander and think of the things you are good at and ways you've used them to serve others; and

    • Think of the joy you felt when you've been the recipient of someone else's kindness. Now you can reciprocate so others can experience the joy you felt.

    • Set realistic boundaries will help others to understand your limits and know what you are and aren't OK with which will keep you avoid burnout and overwhelm.

  2. Have a clear picture of your intended destination. Figure out where you want to be 1-5 years from now. Look beyond your career or education and examine other areas of your life.

  3. Set goals following the SMART concept. The goals must be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Here is an example of a SMART goal: “By the end of September 2023, I am the manager of Human Resources”. This goal gives you the control to take action. Once the thought has been embedded in your mind, you'll feel compelled to take the appropriate action steps.

  4. Develop action steps to reach your goals. An example of an action step that is in line with the above goal is: “I set aside 2 hours a day to do a self-study program to increase my management skills”. (Notice the present tense was used.) Upon completing each action step take time to celebrate.

  5. Keep a positive attitude and seek out the good in bad situations. Laugh at yourself and laugh a lot. It will clear away the blues, increase endorphins, and lighten your mood.

  6. Express gratitude often and be thankful for your many blessings. Read positive affirmations daily

  7. Learn to serve others. Doing so will distract you from any self-inflicted pity not to mention the joy you'll receive in reaching out to others.

In addition to the above steps, remember to take care of your health: have a balanced diet, exercise regularly, reduce stress, get adequate sleep, etc. As you commit to these 7 steps, observe your disposition and energy level. Your reaction to stressful situations would be noticeably different empowering you to take the necessary actions to live a more balanced life.
